The Syrian National Council Political Project
As a result of concerted efforts by the Syrian opposition, the Syrian National Council was established in response to the perceived need for a political structure representing the revolutionary actions taking place on the ground since March 15, 2011, aimed at overthrowing the regime, its symbols, and its leaders. This occurred more than seven months after the start of the revolution, when agreement was reached to establish the Council, which was announced in Istanbul on October 2, 2011. The Council is a legitimate political institution representing the majority of Syrian political forces opposing the regime and the revolutionary movement. It serves as a temporary, all-encompassing national umbrella, expressing the people's will for revolution and change.
